Cyber bullying has become an increasingly prominent problem in our world today. Young people and adults alike have more access to technology than ever before; however, we are not all well versed in responsible use of this technology. Cyber bullying is defined as repeatedly using technology to harm or harass people in a deliberate manner. Even when it is considered to be a joke someone may, and often times, will get hurt. | |
There are some people who feel that cyber bullying isn't real; that if someone is being bullied, they should just log off, turn off their device, and ignore it. If it doesn't happen face-to-face, it is not truly bullying.
In order for someone to be able to ignore this relentless harassment, they would have to have an incredible sense of self. This is something that doesn't develop in people, often until they are well into adulthood.
Teaching digital citizenship and empathy are at the forefront of the battle against cyber bullying. Is this enough? Can we really live in a digital world where cyber bullying does not exist? What can we do to prevent it?
