There are 3 main types of volcanoes:

There have been many violent and non-violent volcanic eruptions through ancient and recent history. The Ring of Fire is a region surrounding the Pacific Ocean that is famous for it's volcanic activity. Even Canada is part of the Ring of Fire. Right now, scientists are concerned about potential geological events, including earthquakes and volcanoes, that could occur along our West Coast. Read the 2 articles to find out why!

Earthquakes
Earthquakes are the tremblings or vibrations of the ground that are caused by the sudden release of energy that has been building up in the Earth's crust.
Earthquakes are a common occurrence and can vary in severity. We use the Richter Scale to determine how severe an earthquake is. The strength of an earthquake is determined by geologists who read a seismogram to understand not only strength, but the location of the epicentre. |
The first "break" of the rock, below the surface of the Earth is called the focus. The epicentre is the point ON the surface directly above the focus. The energy releases from here in waves, called seismic waves, and spreads outward from the focus through the ground.
There are 3 main types of faults: Normal faults, Thrust (or Reverse) faults, and Strike-Slip faults. |
