Rube Goldberg; the Man and the Machines
Simple Jobs, Complex Minds
It’s estimated that Rube Goldberg created a staggering 50,000 cartoons in his lifetime. He always incorporated the use of simple machines and humour was always a key element.
YOUR TASK: Along with your partners, you will have the chance to draw your own cartoon, just as Mr. Goldberg did. As you have seen, his cartoons were not based on realistic principles; however, they did use a variety of steps and different types of machines. As a group, you must plan and design a machine to "solve your task". HAVE FUN! |
What is a Simple Machine?
Bill Nye has reminded us how simple machines function to make work easier. How can you apply this understanding to the building of your own Rube Goldberg machine?

In 8th grade science, you will have an opportunity to study the different simple machines and learn about how they make machines more efficient.
YOUR TASK: Watch the video and record all of the simple machines you see, in the order that you see them. Try to explain HOW they make the Freerunning Machine more efficient. |
